Mississippi is represented on the 21st coin in the American Innovation Dollar program. It features a pair of human lungs in the background, while a surgical assistant passes forceps to the surgeon during the first lung transplant surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. James D. Hardy and his collaborators in June, 1963 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. This surgery opened the door to exciting developments in the possibility of lung transplantation as a new era of therapy for lung disease in humans.
